When can a language certificate be submitted later?
EDK normally requires the certificates with the application. A submission deadline may be extended by up to two years in specified situations, including certain EU/EFTA or UK qualifications or citizenship, already holding a Swiss teaching job that requires EDK recognition, or Swiss protection status S. The exception is not universal; applicants must check the current EDK guidance and their own eligibility. EDK official guidance (German).
What the EDK normally expects
Applicants seeking recognition of a foreign teaching diploma must demonstrate language skills appropriate to the role. The EDK's FAQs generally refer to an official C2 certificate in a Swiss national language. The exact language and any special rules depend, however, on the school level, language of instruction, subjects and applicable procedure. Claiming that every education job requires exactly the same certificate would be misleading.
What counts as evidence?
Speaking a language fluently in everyday life is not necessarily sufficient documentary proof. The EDK normally expects an internationally recognised qualification assessing all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Its FAQs list examples including Goethe, telc, Cambridge, DELF/DALF, CELI, CILS, PLIDA and DELE. A qualifying certificate may be obtained outside Switzerland. An online placement test or course-attendance confirmation alone is not accepted as the required diploma.
Can the deadline be extended?
The language evidence is generally due when the application is filed. The EDK identifies specific circumstances in which the deadline for submitting it may be extended by up to two years. These include certain EU/EFTA or UK diploma and citizenship situations and other defined categories. This is not a universal grace period for every applicant. Current EDK guidance and the actual eligibility conditions must be checked.
Language is only part of recognition
A language certificate does not establish equivalence of teacher training or confirm full entitlement to teach in the issuing state. The EDK handles specified school levels and specialist teaching roles. Vocational education can be subject to separate rules and another competent authority. The proposed teaching activity must be identified before choosing a recognition route.
A useful checklist
Identify the correct EDK category and read the current language-requirements guidance. Verify that the exam certificate covers all required skills and is accepted by the authority. If relying on a later submission, confirm the relevant conditions and keep track of dates. Prepare training documents at the same time: the language certificate by itself will not secure recognition.

For clarity, a Spanish DELE certificate does not prove German, French or Italian proficiency. Applicants must provide evidence of the language actually required for their teaching activity.
