Access to the federal patent as a licensed cadastral surveyor

Swiss recognition bodies and professional qualification procedures.

Role of the Geometer Commission

The Federal Commission for Licensed Cadastral Surveyors conducts the state examination for the federal surveyor patent and is responsible for the Geometerregister. Only patented surveyors entered in the register may independently perform the legally reserved tasks of official cadastral surveying.

For applicants with foreign higher-education qualifications, the route can include recognition of the theoretical prior education, proof of the required professional practice, the state examination and subsequent entry in the Geometerregister.

Main access requirements

The federal patent route typically involves:

  • A qualifying higher-education degree, including an equivalent foreign degree
  • Recognition or completion of the required theoretical prior education
  • Required professional practice
  • The federal state examination
  • Entry in the Geometerregister

The recognition of prior education is only one element of access to the reserved professional activity; the patent and register entry remain separate requirements.
