Professional recognition with MEBEKO

Swiss recognition bodies and professional qualification procedures.

Role of MEBEKO

The Medical Professions Commission (MEBEKO) is the federal authority responsible for recognition matters concerning the university medical professions under the Medical Professions Act (MedBG). It decides on the recognition of foreign diplomas and postgraduate qualifications where a treaty basis for mutual recognition exists.

For qualifications that cannot be formally recognized, MEBEKO also deals with registration routes and with the requirements for obtaining a Swiss federal diploma. Entry in the MedReg and the required language skills are separate elements of professional access; cantonal authorities remain responsible for professional-practice licences.

University medical professions

MEBEKO procedures concern the five university medical professions:

  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Pharmacy
  • Veterinary medicine
  • Chiropractic

The applicable route depends in particular on the country of qualification, the type of qualification and the legal basis for recognition.
