When can recognition be relevant?

Recognition may, depending on the profession and situation, provide access to certain activities in Switzerland.

01

Access to your trained profession

In regulated professions, recognition of a foreign professional qualification is generally required to practise the corresponding profession in Switzerland. Depending on the activity, a separate licence to practise or professional registration may also be required.

For non-regulated professions, formal recognition is generally not required.

02

Qualification and employment

Pay depends on the role, employer and other factors. Swiss wage statistics show clear differences by level of education. Recognition may help you meet the legal requirements for qualification-dependent professions.

Median gross monthly pay · Switzerland 2024 · full-time equivalent
CHF 10’533University degree
CHF 9’288University of applied sciences degree
CHF 6’390Federal VET diploma (EFZ)

These medians describe pay by level of education, not the effect of recognition of a foreign diploma. Recognition does not guarantee employment or any particular salary.

PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

What to establish before you apply.

The following guidance provides an initial overview. Whether formal recognition is required and which authority is competent depend on the occupation and the individual circumstances.

01

Recognition by profession

In regulated professions, formal recognition or professional authorisation may be required. In non-regulated occupations, employer assessment may be sufficient. Academic equivalence and permission to practise are not always the same thing.

  • Teaching: requirements depend on school level, subjects and the relevant recognition body.
  • Healthcare: the recognition and authorisation route differs by regulated profession.
  • Engineering and architecture: professional regulation depends on the activities concerned and, where relevant, the canton.
  • Legal and other regulated professions: professional rules and representation rights require separate assessment.

02

Which authority is responsible?

The competent body cannot be determined from the country of qualification alone. It depends on the profession, the activities intended, the qualification and the applicable recognition framework.

  • EDK/CDIP: relevant in particular to recognition of certain foreign teaching qualifications.
  • SERI/SBFI: competent for certain federal recognition procedures, but not every profession.
  • MEBEKO: relevant to certain university medical professions.
  • Swiss Red Cross (SRK/CRS): relevant to certain non-university healthcare professions.
  • Cantonal or other specialised bodies may be responsible, depending on the profession and licence.

  • After refusal or adverse conditions: Appeal / Complaint, subject to deadline, admissibility and acceptance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Good to know before you begin.

What does recognition achieve for a regulated profession?

Recognition generally puts a foreign professional qualification on an equivalent footing with the corresponding Swiss qualification for access to the regulated profession. For regulated professions, seeking recognition is usually the appropriate route and may be mandatory. Separate authorisations or other professional requirements may still apply. We can help identify the relevant procedure and competent authority for your situation.

Are the listed fees final?

They apply to the described standard services. The applicable fee, scope and exclusions are confirmed in writing before any engagement.

Can I challenge a refusal?

Depending on the decision and procedural law, a remedy may be available. The decision, competent authority and applicable deadline must be assessed individually.

What happens to uploaded documents?

Attachments to the enquiry form are sent as ordinary email attachments to office@diplomarecognition.ch. Documents uploaded in the checkout of a fixed-price service are stored in a private mandate area and are accessible only through the authenticated customer portal.

What does the CHF 2,490 appeal service include?

The service includes legal assessment and drafting of a written appeal within the agreed scope. Filing and representation are included only where legally permitted and expressly confirmed in writing. Submitting an enquiry does not suspend or extend any legal deadline.

Does submitting the form create an engagement?

No. An enquiry is non-binding. An engagement begins only upon express written acceptance of an agreed scope and terms. You remain responsible for deadlines until then.
